In-shelter Sunday Evening+ Shift (7pm-1:00am): ROOTS evening+ volunteers working as part of a volunteer team to ensure the emotional and physical safety of the shelter space while also socializing with guests and building community. From 7pm-8:30pm evening+ volunteers will disinfect all shelter beds, deep clean the shelter space, and prepare the space for guests. When shelter opens at 9:00pm, evening+ volunteers serve pre-made meals, hand out hygiene supplies and bedding, sign guests in and out of restrooms, and supervise guest activities such as computer time and smoke breaks. After lights out at 10:30, evening+ volunteers perform overnight tasks such as assisting in walk-arounds of the room every 10 minutes, being available for guests who require emergency assistance, and completing guest laundry. Evening+ volunteers help to ensure our shelter runs smoothly and efficiently at night while also providing guests with a sense of safety and stability during their stay here.

To ensure the safety of all guests, volunteers, and staff, we require all volunteers to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and to wear face masks throughout the duration of their shift. Volunteers are free to bring in their own face masks or other PPE, and we can provide gloves and disposable face masks on-site. The wellbeing of our volunteers is of the utmost importance, and we only ask you to commit to volunteering if you are safely able to do so. Upon arriving to each shift, your Volunteer Supervisor or other staff will ask you questions listed on the ROOTS COVID-19 screening guide and will take your temperature. Staff and guests are screened in the same way upon entering the space. We appreciate your understanding in this process.

In-shelter Morning+ Shift (Friday 5:00am-8:30am): Morning+ Volunteers will be in shelter each day from 5am-8:30am. Between 5am and 7am, Morning+ volunteers will do a walk-around of the shelter space every 10 minutes to monitor guest safety needs. During this time, Morning+ volunteers will also sign guests in and out of restrooms and assist with guest laundry. From 7am-8:30am the Morning+ role will be identical to that of Morning Volunteers who hand out hygiene supplies, assist with laundry, retrieve supplies from guest cubbies, clean up the shelter. Morning+ Volunteers will have staff's support at all times during each shift. This role is crucial in expanding our overnight coverage so that we can best support our guests throughout their entire time in shelter.
